After patiently waiting out the pandemic, Bollywood is going back to war at the box office. The latest clash will pit Akshay Kumar’s historical biopic ‘Prithviraj’ against Shahid Kapoor’s sports flick ‘Jersey’.
On Wednesday, the makers of the Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt and Sonu Sood starrer announced that the film will hit the big screen on November 5, 2021. This biopic on Samrat Prithiviraj Chauhan is among the highly anticipated films of the year, keeping in mind that it marks the Bollywood debut of beauty queen Manushi Chhillar.
The film that was announced in September 2019, was originally slated for a Diwali 2020 release but was delayed owing to the pandemic. The team even completed shooting a major portion before the lockdown, but couldn’t proceed with the shoot until late last year.
Shahid, on the other hand, had picked the Diwali 2021 release in January and made the official announcement on his Instagram handle. “JERSEY releasing in theatres this DIWALI 5th November 2021.The triumph of the human spirit. A journey I am so very proud of. This one’s for the TEAM ….” he wrote in an Instagram post.
It was only last month that Producer Boney Kapoor engaged in a war of words with director SS Rajamouli for picking October 15 for the release of his film ‘RRR’ when the extended weekend was already booked for the Ajay Devgn starrer ‘Maidaan’
With several big-budget films setting their sights on the big prize promised by extended holiday weekends, box office battles seem inevitable.
Other stars also set to clash at the box office are Salman Khan who announced his plan to release his film ‘Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai’ on the same day as John Abraham’s ‘Satyameva Jayate 2’. Sanjay Dutt’s ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ will also have to share the box office business with Tiger Shroff’s ‘Heropanti 2’.
