In the aftermath of one of the deadliest terror attacks in Kashmir in recent years, US Vice President JD Vance has publicly addressed the international ramifications of the Pahalgam assault that claimed 26 lives, including that of a Nepali national.
Vance, who was on a personal tour of India with his family when the attack occurred, condemned the violence and offered heartfelt condolences to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India. Speaking in a Fox News podcast, he emphasized the need for Pakistan to cooperate with India to track down the terrorists involved.

JD Vance to India: Hold Pakistan Accountable, But Avoid War
“Our hope is that India responds in a way that avoids broader regional conflict,” said Vance. “And we hope, frankly, that Pakistan—where many of these actors find safe haven—takes accountability and supports the pursuit of justice.”
The attack unfolded in the serene Baisaran Valley, often called “Mini Switzerland” for its lush meadows and hills, where tourists were suddenly caught in gunfire. Eyewitnesses recall scenes of panic, with little room to hide in the open landscape.
India has since responded firmly. Apart from launching massive search operations to neutralize the terrorists, the government has indefinitely suspended the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty and ordered the exit of all Pakistani nationals from Indian soil. Security has been heightened across tourist hubs and conflict-prone zones.
The Ministry of External Affairs shared that JD Vance had directly called PM Modi last month, reaffirming US support in the global fight against terrorism and offering any assistance India might require.
On X (formerly Twitter), Vance added: “Usha and I extend our condolences to the victims… We’ve been overcome with the beauty of this country and its people. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
While US leaders including President Donald Trump have condemned the attack, they have so far avoided directly accusing Pakistan, although their messaging has leaned strongly in India’s favor.
This incident marks one of the most serious terror strikes in Jammu and Kashmir since Article 370 was revoked in 2019, once again putting international focus on regional tensions in South Asia.
As the search continues for those behind the Pahalgam carnage, the larger global conversation now pivots to how nations collaborate—not just to prevent such atrocities but to maintain fragile peace in a volatile region.
