The dispute over the Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal (SYL) between Punjab and Haryana was not even resolved now politics has heated up over the issue of construction of a new building for the Haryana Legislative Assembly in Chandigarh. Both the states have come face to face in this matter. Punjab Health Minister Chetan Singh Jaudamajra has reacted sharply to the Union Home Minister’s announcement of allotting land for the new building of the Haryana Legislative Assembly in Chandigarh.
He said that he would not allow the building of the Haryana Legislative Assembly to be built in Chandigarh. On this, Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij said that Punjab should first decide in their own house what they want. Only after that, we will answer. Tauntingly, he said that there is no coordination between the Chief Minister of Punjab and the Health Minister.
The Health Minister of Punjab has also said that Chandigarh belongs to Punjab and will remain in Punjab. Chandigarh already belongs to Punjab and Haryana has also gone from Punjab. The present Haryana Vidhan Sabha building is also of Punjab, it is a different matter that it has been given to Haryana in the form of brotherhood. He has also advised the Haryana Government to make Vidhan Sabha in Panchkula, Faridabad or Kurukshetra.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann should not dilute Punjab’s right over Chandigarh by asking for separate land for Assembly and High Court buildings. Their current building is in Punjab only. By giving up his rights over these heritage buildings, the Chief Minister is doing the work of losing Chandigarh for sure. If the Chief Minister is not careful, such statements will harm the interests of Punjab. Pratap Singh Bajwa, Leader of the Opposition, Punjab
