Who is Sarwan Singh Pandher?

In the ongoing farmers’ agitation, Sarwan Singh Pandher has emerged as a prominent figure leading the ‘March to Delhi’, representing the Kisan Mazdoor Sangarsh Samiti. Hailing from Amritsar, Punjab, Pandher is spearheading the protest demanding a law to ensure Minimum Support Price (MSP) and seeking justice for the farmers killed in Lakhimpur Kheri, allegedly by a BJP leader’s son.

The agitation has drawn farmers from Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh, who are determined not to retreat until their demands are addressed by the government. Pandher, who serves as the General Secretary of Kisan Mazdoor Sangarsh Samiti, has been vocal about the injustices faced by farmers, criticizing the government’s tactics, including the use of water cannons and threats against protesters in Haryana.

Kisan Mazdoor Sangarsh Samiti, a group operating in the Amritsar region for the past 13 years, holds sway over farmers and laborers across several districts in Punjab. Pandher’s leadership has galvanized support for the movement, which aims to secure the rights and welfare of farmers in the face of agricultural reforms.

Having been involved in student movements since his youth, Pandher has always been a staunch advocate for farmers’ rights. Despite hailing from a farming background with land ownership of at least 1.5 acres, Pandher has chosen to stand in solidarity with the farming community, emphasizing the urgency of their demands.

The ongoing standoff between the farmers and the government underscores the deep-seated grievances within the agricultural sector, with Pandher at the forefront of the struggle, representing the aspirations of countless farmers across the country.
