In the annals of Indian history, the valorous tales of Maharaja Surajmal, the eminent Jat king, echo through time. His legacy is celebrated on December 25th as Balidan Diwas, commemorating the day he made the ultimate sacrifice for his people.

Let’s delve into the courageous saga of Maharaja Surajmal, whose political acumen and unwavering spirit made him a revered figure in Indian history.

Born on February 13, 1707, Maharaja Surajmal ruled over the Bharatpur region, creating a formidable kingdom. After the demise of his father, Badan Singh, Maharaja Surajmal ascended the throne in 1755-56, becoming a formidable ruler.

Maharaja Surajmal was hailed as the “Plato of the Jat community” due to his political acumen, generosity, and sharp intellect. His realm extended to Agra, Meerut, Bharatpur, and Aligarh, making him one of the most powerful rulers of his time. His efforts thwarted the attempts to turn Hindustan into a religiously divided nation.

Surajmal fiercely resisted Afghan invaders such as Asand Khan, Mir Bakshi, and Salavat Khan, safeguarding Hindustan from religious discord. Additionally, he thwarted the Marathas’ expansion with his military prowess and strategic foresight. Maharaja Surajmal was instrumental in the construction of the impregnable Lohagarh Fort in Bharatpur, a testament to his strategic brilliance.

Maharaja Surajmal’s influence spread across northern India, and his support for Maharaja Jai Singh of Jaipur solidified regional alliances. His strategic acumen and military might elevate him as the most potent ruler in the region.

Surajmal’s sons, Ishwar Singh and Madho Singh, faced internal strife after the death of Maharaja Jai Singh. The ensuing conflict led to a war, with Surajmal supporting Ishwar Singh. Despite Maratha’s encirclement of the Kumher Fort, Surajmal’s stronghold, the fort remained unconquered.

After suffering their first defeat in the Battle of Panipat, the Marathas planned to attack Maharaja Surajmal. However, he demonstrated exceptional magnanimity by providing food, clothing, and medical aid to the starving and wounded Maratha soldiers, showcasing his humane side even in the face of conflict.

Maharaja Surajmal’s unwavering commitment to his people was evident in the Battle of Balari Ghat. Outnumbered and facing formidable adversaries, Surajmal, along with only 30 horsemen, confronted the Mughal and Biloch forces. In the fierce battle, he embraced martyrdom, leaving a legacy of unmatched courage and sacrifice.
