Punjab University, Chandigarh, India – In a closely watched election, the Punjab University Student Union (PUSU) recently announced its new leadership team. The results of the student union elections, which took place amidst much anticipation and excitement, have brought the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) to power, with Jatinder Singh emerging victorious as the President.
The election also saw significant victories for other student organizations, including the appointment of Rannvijot Kaur as Vice President, representing the Sath party, and Deepak Goyal, from the ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad), who was elected as the Secretary.
Jatinder Singh’s election as President marks a significant moment for NSUI, as they successfully secured the coveted position. Last year, Ayush Khatkar from SFI (Students Federation of India) defeated Harish Gurjar from ABVP with 660 votes. Alongside these results, Rannvijot Kaur has been elected as the Vice President, representing the Sath party, while Deepak Goyal of the INSO (Indian National Student Organization) has been chosen as the Secretary. Gaurav Chahal from PUHH (Punjab University Helping Hands) has been elected as the Joint Secretary.
The voting process for the four-member Punjab University Campus Student Council took place peacefully on Wednesday, with more than 1,200 police personnel deployed to maintain order. There were 21 candidates contesting in the field, with a total of 320 ballot boxes distributed across 170 polling stations.
The election featured various prominent student organizations, including the Punjab University Student Union (PUSU), Students’ Organization of Panjab University (SOPU), Indian National Students’ Organization (INSO), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), and Indian National Student Organization (INSO).
The top positions, including President, Vice President, Secretary, and Joint Secretary, were contested by nine candidates each, while the positions of Joint Secretary, Secretary, and Joint Secretary had four candidates each in the running.
A total of 110 candidates contested for all four positions in the elections. Before the elections, three alliances emerged in the race. SFI joined forces with HIMSU (Himachal Student Union), INSO aligned with SOI (Students’ Organization of India) and HPSU (Himachal Pradesh Student Union), while PUHH (Punjab University Helping Hands) formed an alliance with ABVP.
Last year, NSUI made significant gains by securing two key positions, electing Hardeep Singh Bath as Vice President and Manish Bura as Joint Secretary. The Secretary’s position was won by Pravesh Bishnoi, a joint candidate of the ABVP-led alliance.
These election results are bound to have far-reaching implications for the student community at Punjab University, and the newly elected representatives will play a crucial role in addressing the concerns and aspirations of the student body.
