Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi unveiled the new integrated terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair. The terminal, built at a cost of Rs. 710 Crore over 40,837 square meters, can accommodate 1200 passengers during peak hours, tripling its previous capacity.
Inspired by Nature: The terminal’s design takes inspiration from the islands’ biodiversity, featuring an oyster-shaped structure that harnesses natural light during the day.
Honoring a Freedom Fighter: A statue of freedom fighter Veer Savarkar was also unveiled during the event, paying tribute to his contributions to India’s independence.
A Gateway to Serenity: As the sole commercial airport of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Port Blair Airport serves as the gateway to over 500 pristine islands, offering enchanting water-based activities and a glimpse into the region’s history and culture.
Sustainable Development: The airport’s eco-friendly features, including a double insulating system, LED lighting, Rainwater catchment, and a Solar water plant, reflect a commitment to sustainability.
Future Prospects: The government’s plans include establishing 3 additional airports and 4 water aerodromes with an investment of Rs. 150 crores, further boosting the region’s connectivity and development.
