What to Watch: New OTT Releases This Weekend
1. CREW – Netflix
After doing good business at the box office, “Crew,” starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Tabu, Kriti Sanon, Kapil Sharma, and Diljit Dosanjh, has arrived on Netflix. The plot of this family entertainer revolves around three flight attendants who discover a dead passenger smuggling gold on a flight. With the airline on the verge of bankruptcy and their future uncertain, what will the trio do next?
2. Prasanna Vadanam – Aha
Given the success of Telugu films in the recent past, Aha’s new offering “Prasanna Vadanam” is an exciting title on the list of new OTT releases to watch this weekend. It features Suhas, Payal Radhakrishna, and Rashi Singh Nandu in lead roles. The film follows a man struggling with face blindness, who finds himself dragged into a murder investigation after being caught at a crime scene.
3. Jamnappaar – Amazon MiniTV
This coming-of-age series follows a young and ambitious man who learns to embrace his roots while navigating through the fast-paced city life. The newly arrived series features Ritvik Sahore, Varun Badola, and Raghu Ram, among others.
4. Laapataa Ladies – Netflix
“Laapataa Ladies” is a delightful comedy that cleverly intertwines themes of societal norms and female empowerment within its entertaining narrative. Centred around two brides who find themselves separated from their husbands due to mistaken identities, the story serves as a heartwarming exploration of relationships and the pursuit of independence. Starring Ravi Kishan, Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Srivastav, Pratibha Ranta, Abhay Dubey, and Chhaya Kadam. “Laapataa Ladies” is streaming on Netflix from May 26.
5. Manjummel Boys
The Malayalam survival thriller film “Manjummel Boys” has been written and directed by Chidambaram and produced by Parava Films. The film stars Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, and others. Based on a true incident from 2006, the film revolves around a group of friends from a small town called Manjummel near Kochi, who decide to have a vacation in Kodaikanal.
6. The Broken News Season 2 – ZEE5
The upcoming thriller series has been directed by Vinay Waikul and written by Sambit Mishra. “The Broken News” is based on the world of news reporting. The new season will see Sonali Bendre, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Shriya Pilgaonkar reprise their roles as Ameena Qureshi, Dipankar Sanyal, and Radha Bhargava, respectively. “The Broken News 2” will stream on ZEE5 from May 3 onwards.
7. Panchayat Season 3 – Prime Video
Finally, the wait for the third season of “Panchayat” is over as the series is scheduled to release on Prime Video on May 28. In this season, the Panchayat characters are getting entangled in matters of the heart and politics. This season will again feature Jitendra Kumar, Neena Gupta, Raghubir Yadav, Faisal Malik, Chandan Roy, and Sanvikaa, who will reprise their roles.
8. Swatantrya Veer Savarkar – ZEE5
“Swatantrya Veer Savarkar” is a Hindi-language movie about the life of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Directed, co-written, and co-produced by Randeep Hooda, who also plays the titular role, the movie presents a detailed biographical sketch of Savarkar’s life, including key events from his childhood. While the movie has been criticized for “distorting history and promoting a one-sided agenda,” it received praise for the actors’ performances. Release Date: May 28, 2024.
9. Maidaan – Amazon Prime Video
A biographical sports drama starring Ajay Devgn as pioneering football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, “Maidaan” was available for rent on Amazon Prime Video from May 22 and for free from June 5. Directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma and produced by Akash Chawla, Arunava Joy Sengupta, Boney Kapoor, and Zee Studios, the film includes sports action by Rob Miller and ReelSports.
10. Yodha – Amazon Prime Video
“Yodha,” an action thriller directed by Sagar Ambre and Pushkar Ojha, was available on Amazon Prime Video from May 15. The film, released theatrically on March 15, 2024, stars Sidharth Malhotra, Raashii Khanna, and Disha Patani, and is produced by Dharma Productions.
