In a surprise move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed Bhajanlal Sharma as the new Chief Minister of Rajasthan, breaking a 25-year-old leadership trend. This decision follows the BJP’s recent victory in the Assembly elections, overthrowing the ruling Congress led by Ashok Gehlot.
The announcement came during a BJP legislature party meeting in Jaipur, attended by three central observers led by Rajnath Singh. Sharma, a first-time MLA from Sanganer Assembly in Jaipur, defeated Congress candidate Pushpendra Bhardwaj by 48,081 votes.
Sharma’s appointment is a departure from the dominance of Gehlot and Vasundhara Raje in the state’s politics. He will be supported by deputy CMs Diya Kumari and Dr. Prem Chand Bairwa, along with Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani.
Vasundhara Raje, proposing Sharma’s name during the meeting, received unanimous approval from party MLAs. The decision reflects a recognition of hard work and simplicity within the party.
To balance caste equations, Sharma, a Brahmin, will lead, with Diya Kumari, a Rajput, and Dr. Prem Chand Bairwa, a Dalit, serving as deputy CMs. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated Bhajanlal Sharma, marking a new era in Rajasthan’s political landscape.
