A Journey Rooted in Family

Kaamya’s mountaineering adventure started as a way to connect with her family. “My journey never started as a record-breaking mission. It began only as a way to spend time with my family in the mountains,” she recalls. What began as family outings soon blossomed into a passion that would see her breaking records and inspiring millions. Her father, Commander S Karthikeyan, played a crucial role in nurturing her love for climbing.

The Everest Dream

Among all her achievements, summiting Mount Everest holds a special place in Kaamya’s heart. She describes the challenges of climbing the world’s highest peak, particularly the gruelling journey from Camp 3 to Camp 4 amidst severe weather conditions. “It was even more special because I was climbing with my dad. Submitting Mt. Everest has been a dream both of us have seen for a very long time, and it was amazing to have climbed it together,” she shares.

Overcoming Challenges on Denali

While Everest was iconic, it was Mount Denali in North America that tested Kaamya’s limits the most. Denali’s harsh conditions and the lack of porters made the expedition uniquely challenging. Kaamya’s team of four had to carry their 20kg backpacks along with a 50kg sled over a 20-day expedition. “None of the guiding companies were ready to take me because I was young, Indian, and a girl,” she recounts, highlighting the additional barriers she had to overcome.

Balancing Academics and Adventure

Kaamya Karthikeyan’s life is a masterclass in balance. Despite the demanding nature of mountaineering, she has excelled academically, attributing her focus and discipline to her sporting background. “Academics have always been a priority for me, and mountaineering has been my passion, so I’ve found time for both,” she explains.

A Family’s Role in Success

Kaamya Karthikeyan credits her family for her achievements. Her father’s early expeditions in the Himalayas introduced her to the world of climbing, while her mother’s support and partnership in initial climbs solidified her aspirations. “If not for my parents, my dreams would not have turned into reality,” she acknowledges.

Looking Ahead: The Explorer’s Grand Slam

Kaamya Karthikeyan’s ambitions don’t stop at the Seven Summits. She is now working towards completing the Explorer’s Grand Slam, which involves climbing the Seven Summits and skiing to the North and South Poles.

“I aim to become the youngest person to complete the Explorer’s Grand Slam by skiing to both Poles in 2025,” Kaamya revealed, her eyes set on her next monumental challenge.
