Sky Force Movie Review: Akshay Kumar’s Patriotic Drama Misses the Mark | Peddler Media

Our review of the Akshay Kumar and Veer Pahariya starrer patriotic period drama Sky Force is here.

Star Cast: Akshay Kumar, Veer Pahariya, Sara Ali Khan, Nimrat Kaur

Director: Sandeep Kewlani, Abhishek Anil Kapur

What’s Good: The performances, especially of Akshay Kumar and Veer Pahariya, the camaraderie between Akshay and Pahariya’s characters are etched well, the buildup in the second half is interesting, some of the combat sequences are shot well, the real-life officers are paid a befitting tribute in the end.

What’s Bad: Dialogues and some of the scenes appear too preachy, the emotional scenes do not strike that required chord with the masses, Sara Ali Khan looks underutilized, more chemistry could’ve been shown between the IAF officers, the songs also don’t connect with you.

Loo Break: A misplaced dance number occurs in the film’s first half out of nowhere. We suggest to opt for the loo break during the same.

Watch or Not?: Akshay Kumar’s fans can watch this one but the movie could have been passed off as an OTT release too.

Language: Hindi

Available On: Theatrical Release

Runtime: 125 minutes

Director duo Sandeep Kewlani and Abhishek Anil Kapur’s Sky Force attempts to honour the bravery and sacrifice of the Indian Air Force, focusing on the historic 1965 airstrike on the Pakistan Air Force. The movie delves into the themes of patriotism, sacrifice, and valour, but unfortunately, it gets weighed down by a preachy tone and jingoistic moments that dilute the emotional impact.

The story revolves around the Tiger Squadron of the Indian Air Force (IAF) led by Squadron Leader Kumar Om Ahuja (Akshay Kumar). The squadron is tasked with an airstrike in retaliation for the attack on Indian airfields. The plot follows Ahuja’s efforts to locate his missing comrade, IAF officer TK Vijaya aka Tabby (Veer Pahariya), who defies orders and goes on a dangerous mission to protect his fellow soldiers. In the process, Tabby changes the course of aviation history.

While the plot has the potential to captivate, Sky Force suffers from a weak script and predictable moments. The film leans too heavily on nationalistic dialogues, such as Akshay Kumar’s character introducing himself as “Tera Baap, Hindustan” to a Pakistani officer. The characters, though engaging, lack depth. Sara Ali Khan’s role as Tabby’s wife, Geeta, feels underdeveloped, and her chemistry with Veer Pahariya’s Tabby is missing. The film becomes somewhat engaging in the second half, but the investigation into Tabby’s disappearance becomes predictable.

Sky Force Movie Review: Star Performances

Akshay Kumar delivers his usual performance in emotional and action-packed scenes. However, he doesn’t bring anything fresh, and his portrayal feels like a repetition of his earlier patriotic roles. Veer Pahariya stands out in his debut role, showing confidence, intensity, and vulnerability. Despite limited screen time, Sara Ali Khan does what she can, though her performance lacks the emotional depth needed. Sharad Kelkar’s role as a prisoner of war feels underdeveloped, and Nimrat Kaur’s brief cameo is forgettable.

Sky Force Movie Review: Direction & Music

The air combat sequences in Sky Force are well-choreographed, and the background score is fitting, adding to the intensity of the military setting. The film does well in showcasing the technicalities of military aircraft used by both the Indian and Pakistani air forces. However, the soundtrack doesn’t leave a lasting impact, and it seems similar to the patriotic tracks from Akshay Kumar’s past films.

Sky Force Movie Review: Final Thoughts

Sky Force could have been a gripping tribute to the Indian Air Force but falls short due to its predictable plot, lack of emotional depth, and heavy-handed patriotic tone. Despite the shortcomings, Veer Pahariya’s strong debut performance is a silver lining. If you’re a fan of patriotic films, you might enjoy it, but if you’re looking for a more impactful, nuanced story, this one may not hit the mark.
