The good news is, we’ve officially entered a new year that will bring everything from crime to fantasy, drama, and comedy, movies we’ve all been waiting for.

1. Scream

 Release date  January 14, 2022

That horrifying mask has returned from the past for a fifth sequel. Scream (informally known as Scream 5) is an American horror-thriller film that continues to follow the streak of brutal murders 25 years later. But this time, a new murderer has donned the Ghostface mask and is beginning to target a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from Woodsboro’s (the town in which the initial films are set in) deadly past.

2. Death on the Nile

If you’ve already watched things like Squid Game and SAW, this 2022 Hollywood film will come as no surprise. But for anyone following the Scream franchise, this thriller will be a horrifying throwback. 

 Release date  February 11, 2022

Put on your detective hats for this thrilling upcoming murder mystery of 2022. Based on the 1937 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie, Death on the Nile tells a story of a peculiar murder on S.S. Karnak (a passenger ship) and all the suspects on board.

From the first look, this film is a classic murder mystery worth watching. The star cast seems quite impressive and the fact that it’s adapted from one of the greatest mystery novelists, is reassuring. 

3. Gangubai Kathiawadi

 Release date  February 18, 2022

An Indian biographical crime drama film worth watching in 2022. It’s a narrative of Gangubai Kothewali, a young girl, sold into prostitution by her suitor Ramnik Lal. What makes this story remarkable is that Ganga, in no time marks her own territory and becomes Gangubai – a madame in the red light area of Kamathipura.

Going by the trailer of the upcoming Bollywood film of 2022, this is going to be an epic blockbuster. With Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s grand set, a gripping story, and brilliant casting, the chances of a letdown are quite minimal. 

4. The Batman 

 Release date  March 4, 2022

Gotham City’s very own vigilante, the reclusive billionaire, Bruce Wayne, is back, and this time he’s packing a lot more action. The 2022 film is a reboot of the DC Batman franchise that follows The Riddler, and his dangerous game of cat (you can literally expect Cat Woman to be a part of this) and mouse.

The trailer shows a lot more bloodshed, action and darkness. I am curious (also sceptical) to see Robert Pattinson as Batman but if Matt Reeves played his cards right, this superhero film will be an excellent watch. 

5. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

 Release date  April 8, 2022

The Fantastic Beasts franchise is finally coming to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for a magical quest to save the worlds! A sequel to 2018’s The Crimes of Grindelwald, this 2022 WB (Warner Brothers) production will explore the darkest secrets of our beloved headmaster while preparing for a war with Gellert Grindelwald’s army.

For a Potterhead, this is one of the most-awaited films of 2022. Not only does it explore the life of Dumbledore, it also promises action, a massive screenplay and lots of magic. 

6. Brahmastra

 Release date  September 9, 2022

Here’s an upcoming Bollywood movie of 2022 with a mega-budget and fascinating story. Brahmastra is a Hindi-language superhero film set in two time-frames. The main story is set in present times where Shiva, a young man with superpowers, travels 3000 years back in time to the pre-Mahabharata era to learn about weapons like Brahmastra, to fulfil a mission in the present time.

The teaser looks promising and the fact that this 2022 movie will follow legendary Bollywood actors like Amitabh Bachhan, Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, is quite encouraging. 

7. Morbius

 Release date  TBA for India

A man suffering from a rare blood disease tries a dangerous cure that afflicts him with a form of vampirism! One of the most-awaited superhero films of 2022, this one is based on the marvel comics of Michael Morbius.

It’s the making of yet another super-villain from the treasury of comics by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane. TBH, the trailer is quite impressive. I was indeed taken aback by Beethoven’s music used as the primary mood for the film. It’s still hard to say how well the fans will perceive it. Jared Leto is in the lead so I’d like to think it could end up becoming one of the greatest movies of 2022.
