Pakistan drone attack: Tensions between India and Pakistan have surged once again along the western front, as Pakistan reportedly violated Indian airspace on the night of May 7th and 8th, deploying an estimated 300 to 400 drones across 36 different locations.
In a press briefing held today, Colonel Sophia Qureshi revealed that the Pakistani military launched a large-scale drone operation, targeting Indian military installations. Many of these drones were intercepted and shot down by Indian forces. Preliminary investigations suggest the drones were Turkish-made Asisguard Songar models, capable of surveillance and limited firepower.

“This incursion was not just a violation of airspace—it was a calculated attempt to assess the capabilities of India’s air defense systems and possibly gather strategic intelligence,” said Colonel Qureshi.
Adding to the concern, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh stated that despite launching the drone offensive, Pakistan kept its civilian airspace operational between Karachi and Lahore, potentially putting international and domestic flights at risk.
“While India immediately closed its airspace to protect civilian aircraft, Pakistan used commercial airliners as a cover during the Pakistan drone attack, escalating the danger to global aviation routes,” she added.
India’s Measured Yet Powerful Response
India responded with precision. As per official sources, Indian forces launched armed drones targeting four Pakistani air defense bases. One of these drones successfully destroyed a key radar installation. Although some Indian soldiers sustained injuries during the initial assault, Indian retaliation caused significant damage to Pakistani positions.

Hamas-Style Pakistan drone attack and “Operation Sindoor”
In a disturbing development, Pakistani forces also carried out “Hamas-style” attacks in the Jammu region using low-cost rockets to hit civilian zones. This move appears to be a retaliation to India’s Operation Sindoor—a counter-terror operation conducted on May 8th that dismantled nine terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Operation Sindoor was launched in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of several Indian soldiers and civilians.
India’s Drone Shield Holds Strong
On Thursday night, Indian air defense units successfully neutralized over 50 Pakistan drone attack near the LoC and the international border. In addition, Indian forces reportedly disabled an air defense system near Lahore, sending a clear message that India will not tolerate any breach of its sovereignty.
What This Means Going Forward

This unprecedented escalation underscores a significant shift in modern warfare along the India-Pakistan border, with drone warfare and hybrid tactics becoming increasingly central to cross-border hostilities. Experts suggest that such tactics are likely to intensify, prompting India to further enhance its unmanned aerial defenses and surveillance infrastructure.
As the situation remains tense, the Indian defense establishment has ramped up its surveillance and remains on high alert for further provocations.
